When evaluating employees for promotions, many assume the focus is on hard work or tenure. While these qualities are important, the most crucial trait I seek is the ability to lead and inspire others.
Exceptional leaders aren’t those who merely perform well themselves—they uplift those around them. They build trust, foster open communication, and create an environment where their team can thrive. This requires self-awareness, which is key to understanding not only your strengths but also how your leadership style impacts others.
Self-aware leaders reflect on their actions, seek feedback, and use those insights to improve. This ongoing process demonstrates a commitment to both personal and professional growth. When leaders are in tune with their team’s motivations and needs, they can adapt their approach to maximize each individual’s potential.
But self-awareness alone isn't enough—authenticity is essential. Authentic leaders are transparent, honest about their strengths and weaknesses, and committed to self-improvement. This authenticity builds stronger relationships, creating a culture of trust where people feel valued and understood. A team that trusts its leader is more productive and engaged.
The best leaders also empower their teams. They delegate, provide opportunities for growth, and encourage innovation. By setting a clear vision and leading by example, they align their team’s efforts with the broader company goals, driving performance and engagement.
In short, while hard work and tenure are important, it’s the ability to guide, inspire, and elevate others that I prioritize when considering promotions. Leaders who build trust, practice self-awareness, lead authentically, and empower their teams are those who rise to the top in my companies.
